brianI recently finished reading a thought-provoking book by Don Everts and Doug Schaupp (two InterVarsity Christian Fellowship campus ministers).  In their book, I Once Was Lost, they share many real life evangelism examples they have had ministering to college students over the past 10 years.  As a result of their experiences they have identified five thresholds that people living in the post-modern age need to cross on the way to being born again.

The first threshold that they identify is that their unsaved friends had to move from distrusting to trusting a Christian.  This can only happen if we are living out our Christianity by loving others without expecting anything, including a "conversion," to deter us from befriending and engaging with them.  We must maintain our relationships ("divine appointments") with an attitude of grace and an "open hand" rather than thinking of ourselves or some kind of pious agenda.

This seems to be exactly what happened when Jesus encountered the woman at the well in Samaria (John 4).  He actually engaged her by asking for some help.  Even though He could see into her heart, He didn't judge her, avoid her, chastise her, or minimize her.  He simply spoke the truth to her without excusing or condemning her.  In other words, He spoke it like it was.

Let's walk where Jesus would walk.  Let's talk to those He places before us.  Let's love without expectation of anything in return.  Let's pray that we will be the workers that Jesus prayed for in Matthew 9:38.  Let's be trustworthy in all of our encounters!  Blessings my friends!
